New perspectives with the University of Hamburg

A particularly gratifying and promising step in our educational work was a constructive exchange with the University of Hamburg. The discussions focused on how Beneficial e. V.'s many years of practical experience in Ghana can be combined with academic research, university teaching, and international knowledge transfer in the future.

For many years, we have been committed to improving educational opportunities for children and young people in Ghana. In doing so, we have not only gained extensive experience in practical project work, but also valuable insights into the social, cultural, and educational policy challenges on the ground. We would like to share this knowledge even more extensively with educational institutions and research institutions in Germany in the future.

In discussions with the University of Hamburg, various possibilities for future cooperation were explored. The idea of bridging the gap between academic theory and practical development cooperation is particularly interesting.

The following approaches were the focus:

  • Guest lectures and seminars: Through personal accounts and insights into everyday school life in Ghana, students could gain an authentic impression of the opportunities and challenges of the Ghanaian education system. At the same time, topics such as global educational equity, cultural differences, and sustainable development cooperation could be conveyed using concrete examples.
  • Scientific papers and research projects: Our educational projects could offer interesting starting points for bachelor's and master's theses as well as further academic research. Possible topics include school development, educational opportunities, social participation, sustainable infrastructure, and the long-term impact of international educational initiatives.
  • Internships and research stays in Ghana: Another perspective is to offer students the opportunity to gain practical experience directly on site. They could become familiar with everyday school life, investigate their own academic questions, and simultaneously gain insight into social living conditions. Of course, this would require careful preparation and suitable organizational frameworks.
  • International school partnerships: The possibility of strengthening the network between schools in Hamburg and Ghana was also discussed as an interesting approach. Such partnerships could promote intercultural exchange, facilitate mutual learning, and open up new perspectives for students in both countries.
  • Joint funding and research projects: In the long term, it would also be conceivable to jointly develop new project ideas, explore funding opportunities, and directly link scientific findings with our practical educational work. This could lead to innovative approaches that would benefit both academic research and local communities.

This exchange is particularly valuable to us because we are convinced that sustainable education thrives on mutual learning. While we can contribute our experiences from our daily work in Ghana, collaborating with a university offers the opportunity to explore new academic perspectives, further develop existing approaches, and strengthen the long-term impact of our projects.

At the same time, we want to contribute to making Ghana and its educational realities even more visible in university teaching and research. It is important to us not only to talk about challenges, but also, and especially, to highlight the potential, commitment, and perspectives of the people on the ground.

The discussions were an important first step and revealed numerous interesting possibilities. Of course, concrete collaborations still need to develop from this. We are all the more pleased by the openness and interest shown in our work.

Our aim is to develop this initial exchange into a vibrant long-term partnership that combines science, education and practical development cooperation – thereby creating new opportunities for people in Hamburg and Ghana.

We're excited to see what opportunities will arise from these discussions and sincerely hope we can take the next steps together. Wish us luck! 🙂
