Project: Daily school meals for all children (Video)
To ensure our students receive the best possible daily meals, we are building an additional room where the children can sit together in a relaxed atmosphere and eat together. This common room will be furnished with various comfortable seating options, so that the children and teachers are not confined to the classrooms. Food at school is absolutely essential and a key reason why many parents send their children to school. This is one of the motivations behind our decision to invest in a communal dining area. A garden is also in the planning stages. We intend to use our own fresh fruit and vegetables for the meals we prepare ourselves. A kitchen is also on our agenda.
Why do we focus not only on "education" but also on "nutrition" and "hygiene"?
School lunches help children escape poverty. Hunger has a firm grip on Ghana. Our goal is therefore clear: We want to motivate as many children as possible in our project area to attend school regularly and study diligently. The number of children attending school has drastically decreased: Almost half of the children leave school early to search for food. Many children drop out of school altogether to work for low wages. Our solution: A nutritious and healthy school lunch!
Not only school meals: hygiene and nutrition are also on our timetable.
We supplement the daily school lunch with hygiene training. Easily contagious diseases like cholera spread rapidly. If children know how these diseases are transmitted and how to protect themselves, epidemics can be nipped in the bud. The children will get sick less often and be able to attend school more regularly. But it's not just the children who receive training; the teachers and especially the cooks also participate regularly. With the installation of the water supply and the large water tank in February of this year, we've already taken a major step forward. We expect a positive effect from expanding our school lunch program, and we sincerely hope that more children will attend our school regularly again. With full stomachs, children learn more attentively, participate actively in class, and make different plans for their future. In addition to providing essential supplies, we hope that our families will send their children to school more often. The combination of health and education offers the best way out of hunger and poverty.
